Abbeyfield has 17 houses in the Western Cape, 2 in Gauteng, and 1 in KZN. Our houses in the WC span Metro South / North / East, Eden Karoo, Cape Winelands-Overberg and the Westcoast.

Abbeyfield is largely a volunteer driven organization with a small core staff component.

The cost of rental is dependent on where the house is located, the size of the room and whether any additional conveniences are available such as an ensuite or a kitchenette. Residents share communal ablution facilities, the kitchen and living quarters. However, each resident can enjoy the comfort and privacy of his or her own room. Our couples rooms are very limited, and the demand is growing daily.

Each house runs as an individual entity and has its own bank account. Rental received is deposited directly into the house bank account and covers the municipal cost, insurance, emergency response system, cleaning materials, garden service and minor repairs. We strive to ensure that each house is economically viable and well maintained.

The Department of Social Development Supports the organization with a much-needed subsidy based on the number of residents in each house who are earning at a sub-economic level and are on Sassa pensions.
There is an ever-growing demand and a severe shortage of accommodation for elderly persons in South Africa. The Abbeyfield model leans itself to expanding its reach to areas where the need is greatest.
